Where Madmen Rule, by Eugene Hayman.

Where Madmen Rule is a 140,000-word, headlong dive off the science-fiction highboard into a churning sea of romance, true love, misogyny, racism, psychotic tyrants, economic oppression, and state-sponsored terrorism. At a moment when political chaos is increasing worldwide, Where Madmen Rule shines a light on the deviant personalities of would-be tyrants while exploring the personal sacrifices ordinary people must make to resist them. Set centuries in the future, the story is as relevant to our day as this morning’s BreakingNews.

Mike Hayden and Theresa Seyboldt’s budding romance is stymied, and they are put in imminent danger when a bloody coup d’etat engulfs the subterranean city of Hyumbar. Trapped in the unforgiving desert of Sunworld, with a psychotic madman snapping at their heels and the fate of multiple worlds hanging in the balance, they can depend on nothing but courage and their native wit while facing a fate worse than death.

“Excellent, good old-fashioned science fiction adventure: a roller-coaster plot, fun use of technology, heroism, romance, and humor, effectively delivered with great, no-nonsense writing.” –Ray Litt, Dirty Little Bookers.

“Science fiction seems to have ceded the ground to the dungeons and dragons crew. No longer. Where Madmen Rule is a hard science fiction romp in the vein of Robert Heinlein or James Hogan within the first few pages, the author draws the reader into an action-packed adventure with a sharp scientific edge. The science is believable, the characters realistic, the story engaging, and the conclusion satisfying. This is accomplished without any needlessly complex plot devices or verbal trickery. It is just good, solid science fiction. I greatly miss the likes of Issac Asimov and Arthur Clark, and this book brought back memories of these earlier icons. I particularly liked the futuristic construction worker aspect of the protagonist.

The political intrigue and character interaction were spot on, and I found myself heavily invested in the characters before I knew it. I wound up reading this novel straight through, and it has been a long time since I have been this captivated by a book. Highly recommended…” –SciFiGuy

“I don’t usually read this genre of book, but I had a hard time putting it down–resulting in not a few sleepy days at work. Good character development married to a strong storyline with just enough allusions to current events to make the story feel real.” –CMR

“Although based in the future with advanced technology the lust for power and money still drives the corrupt. Well written, I would like a book two.” –Bob Pierce

“Loved this book! You’re drawn in on page one, and it never stops moving. Great characters, excellent plot, and just made me want to keep reading to see what happened next! Can’t wait for Mr. Hayman to write another!” — A.M.
